According to engineer Mick Glossop, who has worked with Van since Wavelength in 1977, Van’s vocal mic is almost always a dynamic. Van used to record with a Sennheiser MD421, but has moved on to a Shure SM87. On the Avalon Sunset album the vocal was compressed with a DBX 160 and given a 1dB bump 10kHz.
