Bowie’s ’73 album of covers, Pinups, was recorded at the Château d’Hérouville residential recording studio (the same as Elton John’s Honky Château). Producer Ken Scott recorded Aynsley Dunbar’s drum set with a Neumann KM84 small-diaphragm condenser on snare, U87s on toms, and an AKG D20 on kick (he can’t recall the overhead mics). The close drum mics were gated with Kepex gates. During mixing, which was done on a Sound Techniques console, Scott added reverb with an EMT plate.
